Greetings golfers,
Well the good scoring at St Augustines seems to be continuing and I have no hesitation in saying it has to have something to do with the condition of the course. The Summer Open at the weekend brought a number of great scores and this was then followed by the Ladies Pro Am on Tuesday.
The honours in the Summer Open eventually went to Tom Coker with a superb nett 61, but the margin was only one from Terry Cable and he was only one better than the early front runner, Peter Hendry. Well done to everyone who scored well.
This then led onto the Ladies Pro Am on Tuesday. Having seen everyone scoring so well at the weekend I was hoping to do well on Tuesday and, fortunately, it did indeed happen. My team of lady captain Caroline Richardson, Julie Penn and Christine Opperman played very well and eventually won the team event, while I got my putter going to shoot 63 and win the pro event. I hate to sound negative but I'm still annoyed at myself as I was 6 under par after 13 and I hit a ball out of bounds on 17! What could have been, but that's golf. So having played and putted well I'm in a reasonable position to comment on the greens which, I think, are running very smoothly now. I made around 140 feet of putts and I can assure you that just does not happen on poor greens.
Even more pleasing was the reaction of many others who played the course. There aren't many negative comments flying around, pretty much the opposite in fact, and I think it's a great thing that this is the image of our club now. There is of course still work to be done but there's a lot to be thankful about at the club at the moment. Jim Turner, Gary and his staff all need to be thanked and encouraged as what they are doing is working well.
