Hi everyone,

So was it a good US Open or a bad one that just resembled a normal PGA tour event, as several pundits thought? Well, before the championship started I stated that it was wide open as US Opens often are, mainly because the conditions usually level the playing field, too much so in my opinion. What I mean by that is that if you make the fairways and greens too difficult to hit, and the rough just off them so tough that it's always a hack out, then the best players cannot shine as everyone is reduced to hacking it and hoping for the best. Effectively you have a lottery.

That isn't exactly what happened but I still think the lottery took place early on in the piece, but trust me that does not take anything away from Brooks Koepka who, in the end, was head and shoulders the best player. An early leaderboard on Friday told a familiar US Open story: Day and McIlroy out of it, DJ and Jon Rahm struggling to make the cut, whilst the top of the leaderboard featured three players that most people would never even have heard of. The truth is though, even Rory remarked on how wide the fairways were so there was no excuse for missing them so this was not altogether typical.

I also stated that it would be a big hitter who won. Whilst that ultimately proved correct it was amazing and very pleasing to see the performance of Brian Harman who is anything but that. He makes me look tall and is a long way behind the bigger hitters on tour (still quite a bit past me I should add!!) and yet he came within a few putts of winning on Sunday. I cannot say too much about how he plays, it's that impressive.

But, lottery or not, Koepka fulfilled the promise that he has shown over the last few years. I've mentioned him a few times in my emails, but as he'd had no form to speak of recently, even I hadn't backed him this time. In the end though he looked majestic, and cool with it, and he deserved to win.

One thing that may come out of it is this - given that the fairways were quite generous and that most of the best players blew out because they still couldn't hit them, does it then not add up that the game has been rewarding poor driving for too long? For years we have watched players smashing drives miles, often into the rough only to get pretty good lies and no penalty. This course seems to have found them out and rewarded the likes of Harman who kept hitting fairways. Perhaps this is something we will see more of in the future as the golfing authorities wise up.
