Hi Everyone,  

So DJ does it again, and this time on a course that you might have thought he would struggle on. A much tighter test than usual greeted the players in the first WGC event in Mexico (the event that Donald Trumps 'Blue Monster' used to host). In places it looked far more like a local golf club with small greens and tight holes and I found it fascinating to see how the best in the world handled it. Sure enough they didn't always stay out of the trees, but what was super impressive was the consistency of their recovery shots. Time after time it seemed they recovered from poor tee shots with low hooks and cuts that on a few occasions actually resulted in outrageous birdies and even eagles. It was also great to see Rory return and get straight back in contention. Not quite good enough to topple DJ (nor the fantastic result for Tommy Fleetwood) but things look bright in the McIlroy camp as we hurtle towards The Masters at the beginning of April.

When you read this we will be just three weeks away from this year's first major so inevitably we will start thinking about potential winners. DJ looks great but he might have burnt too brightly too soon. Jason Day hasn't played his best for a while but always does well at Augusta. My money is going towards Rory and Jordan Spieth, with a little each-way bet on Sergio. Perhaps not Sergio's best chance this year (The Open will be better) but I just have a sneaky feeling for him.


 

Talking of The Masters I will be doing a sweepstake at £5 per entry. This will be for the top 60 players in the world playing this year with the winner receiving a new Callaway XR 3 wood and the runner-up an Odyssey putter. Once I have 60 entries we will draw players, witnessed by the Captain so it will all be fair. I will be going rond at the weekend but you can also see me in the shop.
