It seems the weather really doesn't know what time of year it is. One moment we have wonderful summer temperatures and the next there's a monsoon. Without doubt the rain couldn't have come soon enough as the course certainly needed it, especially after the autumn maintenance, but I really can't remember a year like this.
In recent years June has been the best month and by August we've been experiencing wet weather. This year summer seems to have come a little later and it's been a totally different August. As a result we've been seeing golf courses looking burnt out with the ball rolling forever on almost white fairways.
You would think that would make things easier then as courses are playing shorter, but does it?
I would say yes, as long as you are hitting the ball straight. Anything offline just won't stop, so it ends up in the rough and you miss lots of greens. In contrast the wet months ahead mean that even a wayward shot stops as soon as it lands, possibly stopping it from going into real trouble. While the course plays longer you get into less trouble and of course, preferred lies help as well. But I know which you'd all prefer so enjoy it while it lasts people. Those long drives will soon start coming back to you so make the most of having wedges into long par-4s now!
Talking of long drives, remember the Ryder Cup starts next Thursday. Can it really be two years since Gleneagles? I hate to say it but I really do think America will win this time. They have a very good team that seems to be in good form, whereas I think Europe looks a little bit up and down. It was great to see Danny Willett play so well last weekend, pushing Francesco Molinari close in Italy but there are worries elsewhere. Henrik Stenson is suffering with a knee injury and none of the other qualified players have done much recently. Yes, Rory won a few weeks ago but he followed it up with another disappointing display the week after.
Of course the Ryder Cup is a totally different event but I just can't help feeling we may come up a little short this time, but I'd love to be proven wrong.
