Captains' Drive-In and Putt-Out
Last Saturday saw a great turnout for the new Captains' Drive-In which was a great success. A lot of fun was had and the outgoing Captains' putt-out was, I believe, a great success. Outgoing Club Captain Richard Punyer knocked his 30 footer to just over two feet which, in my opinion, was a very good effort. However, the biggest cheer of the day was reserved for the outgoing Lady Captain, Sue Jones, as she rolled hers inside Richard's. Incredibly, Bernard Connellan then topped them both - great putting everyone.
It was then the turn of the new Captains and despite the nerves of being first up, Kay Barnard hit three beauties to put the others under pressure. Ian Grant followed suit but the performance of the day came from new Junior Captain, 12-year-old Kieran Stubbs, who hit three superb shots and beat all the adults with a best carry of 206 yards into a 20 yard wind. This clearly put too much pressure on new Club Captain Paul Robertson who couldn't quite get to Kieran's longest with his first two. His third was clearly going to clear the first green - until he heeled it 100 yards left. However, I promised Paul I wouldn't mention that one so I won't.
Lots of people stayed afterwards and I have to say Chestfield Golf Club is a wonderful place to be when we have lots of people creating such a good atmosphere. Well done to all those taking part and to everyone who helped to make it such a good day. That was then followed the next morning by the Captain vs Vice-Captain match which happily saved the new Captain's weekend. A cracking weekend which I hope will just be the start of a great year for everyone at the club.
Following that there has been continued success for Chestfield's juniors this week. On Thursday, Kieran and Sam Robertson played in the Rochester and Cobham Junior Open against 40 others and I am very proud to say that they both performed amazingly well. Sam shot a gross 74 (nett 69) for 7th and Kieran went even better, shooting gross 78 (nett 67) for second place. A fantastic effort by both of them and I hope you'll all congratulate them if you see them. They are helping to put Chestfield on the map and I hope you'll all support them as they and several others push forward with very bright golfing futures.
