Well the Autumn Meeting was a great success last weekend - a fantastic turnout and the weather turned up to make it a lovely weekend. The recent rain followed by sun meant the greens were back to pretty much their best, confirmed by most of the players I spoke to (although a few actually complained they were too fast!). Scoring was pretty good on the whole although the speed of the greens may have been to blame for the lack of really low ones.


 

The stand out scores from the weekend were the lowest scratch scores of 70 on Saturday by Nick Gladstone and 71 on Sunday by Sam Robertson who is rapidly becoming a very good golfer. Maybe he will challenge Nick for the Club Championship next year? 

The overall nett competition was a really close run thing. The early overall leaders of Sam Robertson and Gerry Davis were looking at a play-off as they stood on 138 overall, but soon they were upstaged by Mark Kelk with a very strong 136 (four-under-par). It was then left for everyone to wait for a few of the Saturday low scores still to come in and they included Tony Ford. As he left the 18th green he seemed very guarded about his score and it wasn't until a little later that he relented and showed a total of 137 to be pipped by just one shot. His pain was clear to see as he rued a four-putt on the infamous 14th green that undoubtedly cost him. 

However, I wonder how many other stories of woe there were over the weekend? Our game can be a painful one at times - Tony, you need to remember how well you played. We can't get everything right every time. Well done to everyone and especially to Del Clark who was there for the duration on both days to keep the scoring up to date. Roger's shoes were always going to be tough to fill but Del is doing a great job.


 

As the Midweek Stableford has come to a close we have the Winter League starting on Monday, 12 October. As in previous years, there is a weekly competition and an overall prize. You need to register in the pro shop and pay £10 to enter and then you can play on any day of the week - again entering in the pro shop on the day for £2. As entrants can play on any day of the week this is a non-qualifier but it is a great way of keeping your winter golf sharp - not to mention a good way to possibly win a few quid! Pop into the shop and we will sort your entry out and answer any questions you may have.

Equally your grips are probably finding the conditions a little more difficult to cope with so remember that we have at least ten varieties in stock ready for fitting to your clubs.
