Greetings from David Ledingham | David Ledingham, PGA Professional | Hi everyone,
Well what an incredible US Open! Firstly, they give them a course which proved incredibly difficult, dividing opinion and attracting scathing comments from some, and then we have a finish that proved shocking and dramatic in equal measure. Once again the boy Spieth stood firm when others faltered, once again drawing comparisons with Jack Nicklaus.
You can only feel sorry for Dustin Johnson who went from having a 12 foot putt to win the US Open to losing it inside a minute. We have all stood over a 3 and a half footer and felt the pressure but one can only imagine how he felt as he saw the first putt keep rolling past to a miss-able distance. Branden Grace can also feel gutted after his tee shot on 16 disappeared out of bounds. He lost by one after taking a double because of it!
And what of Rory McIlroy? Once again he showed his frailties by not producing when the pressure was on him to get himself into contention only to come storming through at the end when all was seemingly lost. Interestingly, when it started to look like he had a chance he suddenly hit the wall and dropped back again. So is this a common problem with him? Unfortunately I think it is. Spieth is showing that even when all is not 100% he can fight and eek out a score mainly thanks to his putting. Rory is very streaky and always has been. Even very early in his career he suffered under the gun and his win at Quail Hollow (in 2010?) was from way behind and shooting a 62 in the final round. It has only been in the last couple of seasons that he has prevailed when things were tight but I think we will have to endure a bit more of this from him over the years. I actually think that if he plays his best he is 10 shots a competition better than anyone but when was the last time he shot four rounds as good as he can? Having said that if everyone played their best and holed everything I think Louis Oosthuizen might have something to say about that! If only the best swinger of a club ever (my opinion) could putt reliably!! He came second by a shot and we all watched him miss so many makeable putts over the four days, and that's how it is for him most weeks. He and Lee Westwood should set up their own support group.
Club Championship
It's nearly here and the course is nearing its best just in time thanks to this lovely weather that's finally turned up. I shall be going out today to sort out some good pin positions for you all so be prepared for some interesting new ones and a few good oldies. I promise you they will all be fair!
I have been watching out of my window at the low handicappers who are suddenly out practising hard so I am looking forward to who will be crowned Club Champion 2015. Can Alex defend his title or will Nick be back to reclaim? Can the now veteran Phil Hughes and Mike Wilson (sorry guys but if I have to put up with it…) make a charge for the title or will a young Spieth-like pretender take the trophy? It's all live on Sky Sports on… oh sorry, no its not, but I hope you will all come to the club if you're not playing to see the drama unfold a week tomorrow.
