Hi everyone,
I am now convinced that there is something in the water around these parts. I have personally witnessed a hole-in-one on two occasions this Spring and I've heard of another two recently in weekend competitions at Chestfield. On Saturday I witnessed another at Mid Kent Golf Club in their Pro-Am, which won the player a cool £500! I now here that the Mitrebeens have been getting in on the act: both Tom Elvidge and Mel Evans have achieved the feat in the last two weeks during Mitrebeens competitions and both at the 12th. That's a fantastic achievement by both so huge congratulations to them.
I think at this point it's worth saying that the odds (according to Wikipedia - must be right) of the average golfer holing-in-one are around 12,500 to 1 and a tour pro around 2,500 to 1. Given these two fine gentlemen were playing a hole of around 150 yards and they were probably using slightly longer clubs than the average five handicapper, I reckon the odds are a bit higher but I could be wrong.
There is also a rumour circulating that yours truly, whilst out with the juniors on an on-course lesson, may have had a hole-in-one at the 16th a few weeks ago. I would like to personally chastise Max Reid for ratting me out as I told them not to say anything (as I hate all the attention you understand) - thanks Max - you are in trouble!!
So, I think it's safe to say that the odds of a hole-in-one at Chestfield are somewhat lower than 12,500 to 1 at the moment! Make sure you have insurance (which we can provide of course) and that you're in the twos club - you never know when you'll scoop the lot. What odds another this weekend??
Crested Clothing - We have just taken delivery of our new Chestfield crested summer clothing for both men and ladies. As you can see they are in a variety of colours including some very bright ones! Ladies have sleeveless as well as short-sleeved polos and for the first time we have some striped styles as well. We also have new caps in stock in a variety of colours. We can, of course, also order in any other sizes and colours that you'd like so please feel free to come in and look at the new range, but if you can't see what you'd like just let us know and we'll get it for you very quickly.
Cleveland Wedge offer - We also have a Cleveland wedge promotion at the moment which is a buy one, get one half price deal. These are fantastic wedges that we have all known for many years to be one of the frontrunners in this area.
I personally used Cleveland for many years so I can easily recommend them. If you have been thinking of changing one or all of your wedges now is the time to get one for £45.00 (the first at £90.00). We have chrome and black oxide finishes in stock now.
Ok, so who's enjoying the rough at the moment? As I said a few weeks ago this is probably the toughest time to play any golf course if you are off-line, as the rough is at its thickest and most penal. However, if you are straight the course is for the taking hence there have been some great scores lately (particularly in the Midweek Stableford last week where 40 points only got 7th place!).
So I don't care what club it is, you MUST hit the fairway! Do not just get out drivers and 3-woods because you think you should. Unless you are very confident with these clubs, AND they are going to give you a very definite length advantage (this is one of those 'be honest with yourself' moments - how far do you actually hit your driver and 3-wood?) then hit the club you know you'll hit straightest. Trust me it will pay dividends.
Just a quick mention of the Summer League that is now running. Those of you who played in the winter league will understand the format - you put in one card a week with prizes for the best rounds of the week and then your 10 best rounds over the summer go towards the overall prize at the end of the period. £10 to enter up front and then £2 per round.
This is a great way to make your weekly round a bit more fun and to play for a few quid. The rounds do not qualify so your handicap cannot be affected so it is purely a fun 'swindle'. You can join any time as there is around 20 weeks still to go! This in no way affects the incredibly popular Midweek Stableford (always on a Wednesday afternoon) which is a qualifier. Last week the field totalled a remarkable 58! Chestfield goes from strength to strength!!
