Hi everyone, Last week I was bigging up Justin Rose who has looked pretty invincible in the last month and a half. Sure enough there he was on Sunday, dominating the tournament as was predicted, looking like only a desert storm could knock him off the top spot and therefore keep him from overhauling Tommy Fleetwood for the Race to Dubai, when suddenly the golfing gods decided to get involved. Bang, bang, and two dropped shots saw him fall behind several surging players, most notably the hugely impressive, particularly as he’s a ‘secret’ European, Jon Rahm. Try as he might he couldn’t get the two shots back that would have seen him overtake Fleetwood. As disappointed as he must have been, he still had the class to congratulate his opponent. Was it a fail by Rose? Well yes, but I don’t think it’s that simple. It is incredible what the finishing line can do to even the best and it’s not like Rose hasn’t got over it before. He will undoubtedly be very disappointed with a couple of mental errors, most notably driving into the fairway bunker on the very difficult 15th. That was a no-no that should have been reserved only for those coming from behind and therefore chancing their arm. He didn’t need to do that and the same could have been said for his second to the previous hole the par 5 14th. He had no business being near the water and these two mistakes cost him everything. But when you’ve been perfect for 4 days is it not a bit churlish to pick on these two small lapses? Maybe, but it’s the two hours leading to the finish that are everything as Jack Nicklaus often remarked upon. Rosey may have failed but just two weeks previously he gained from the same thing happening to Dustin Johnson. Funny how golf works isn’t it? |
