What happened next will be talked about for decades to come. The one thing most people seem to be ignoring is just how bad his tee shot was on the 13th. On Thursday last week in a small Pro-Am I hit an awful tee shot on my 15th hole. It was 30 yards right of my intended target. The point I'd like to make is that standing over my next drive on the next hole I was so worried that I hit a pull into the left hand trees! That's what us mortals do when these things happen. If I was Spieth I would have been fried and I would have dreaded the next shot let alone the next drive.

But that's where he stands apart, not just from me but from the vast majority of his peers. To be cool enough to calmly sort out his best option and to then rescue a miracle five, when all seemed lost when he watched his tee shot sailing 70 yards right, is nothing short of stunning. To then be confident enough, despite one of the worst shots of his career happening half an hour previously, to hit his next shot almost in the hole defies belief. Spieth made his birdie on 14 and then went eagle, birdie, birdie to see off Matt Kuchar who must still be wondering what on earth happened.

It was one of the most incredible displays of mental strength you will ever see in sport. He should have melted. Instead any demons that he might have been fighting have been pretty permanently crushed and all his rivals will know it. Don't expect him to collapse again - he and they now know he can recover from anything. Does that mean he'll win everytime? No of course not, but he certainly doesn't have to worry that he has a problem and that may well free him up to win many more now.

It was certainly yet another Open to remember and I for one will be looking forward to next year's, expecting yet more drama.
