So the beautiful weather continues! Clearly as I said last week it is not making the course any easier as scores this weekend were still generally a few higher than you might expect and, yet again the 2's on Sunday were worth over £20 each! Mind you that was helped by the fact that Barry Shepherd managed one - and wasn't in the 2's!! Still, no doubt there's a few ball draws coming out soon with his name on it. Never mind Bazza.
A few of you have remarked on my golf recently which has been very consistent. I played again in the Flanagan on Sunday and made 5 birdies but also a treble bogey and two bogeys.
Firstly, only one of those bogeys was not down to purely a mental error - I hit a perfect drive and mid wedge into 14 and still couldn't stop the ball from going to the back of the green and then three putted. The others were definitely just mental errors - not being clear and positive about what I was doing before swinging. On the fifth the wind was into and off the left - a horrible wind for right handers that fade the ball, of which I am one. So instead of being very positive about my aim point and swing I allowed my thoughts to get negative as I swung and came over the top smothering it left. A double hit under a bush later and I made a seven!! At the 13th I made a bad mental error and hit the wrong club and half way through my swing I tried to hammer it - knowing it wasn't enough!
So why am I whittering on about this? Well I am very aware that I did not hit one bad shot on Sunday that was down to a 'poor technique'. Very few were anything like perfect (I hit a crunching drive up 14 and a few really nice iron shots) but none got me into real trouble and they generally gave me lots of chances. My technique therefore was good enough for now and my dropped shots were not because of it. Now remember what I said last week - we just need to know where the ball is going not to be perfect. Apart from one really bad shot on Sunday I would have shot 67 or 68 and I don't think I'm nearly as good as where I will be in a few years time. And the point is you can all be the same.
How many of your bad shots this weekend were because of bad thoughts like I explained above? For those of you who have lessons with me you will know I talk a lot about how I see my job as your coach - firstly, to help you play your best now and then to make your best better. You need to know what those thoughts and feelings are that help you to make your best swing now, no matter how the ball then flies (ie fade, draw, low, high). If you know where your ball generally goes when you make your normal swing then you can play this game. It is usually our bad thoughts that make us do weird things, but you'll then go and try to change your technique thinking that will help. It will make you better in the long run but it won't stop you making those bad swings when you lose focus and make a different swing because of what is on your mind. Think on people!
