Hello everyone,
Yes. it's that time of year again. My annual Pro's Day is on Saturday, 30 July this year and I'm going to get you all out for a texas scramble, which we all enjoy, but as usual there will be some tiny variations. We'll also have a little putting competition afterwards before you all dash off to get ready for the Summer Ball. It should be a great day so let's hope the weather shines on us all.
You will have seen the new warm-up nets that have been installed. The nets have superb mats to hit off so they really are a great improvement for the club. No doubt I'll see you warming up properly from now on!
With the Club Championship looming it seems that quite a few players have been coming into some serious form. Last weekend saw Alex Young win the Phoenix Trophy with a great 40 points. Peter Kelk produced a superb nett 66, playing off six, to win the Flanagan Trophy. The previous weekend saw a number of good scores as well, with Liam Stubbings shooting a superb 44 points on Saturday, and Roland Prosser an equally impressive nett 63 in the PGA Medal on Sunday - not bad when you're playing off 10 (you can almost smell the fajitas from here!).
These are all great scores and back up what is happening with the course at the moment. The greens have really improved to very near their best and the scores across the board seem to be reflecting this. I hope you'll all give Trevor Clarke and all his supporting cast your support as these improvements continue.
The U.S. Open became a remarkable tournament for a several reasons, but not all of them good. Firstly, Dustin Johnson finally crossed the winning line, very deservedly, to claim his first Major. You have to think the flood gates may now open for DJ so keep your eyes on him. However, this was marred somewhat by the controversy over his apparent breach of the rules when his ball moved on the 5th green. I have watched this a number of times (keep scrolling down this newsletter to view a video for yourself) and, according to the Rules of Golf, I cannot see how he can be penalised as he clearly did not ground his club. Moreover, if they have deemed that he caused the ball to move then he would have to replace it before playing his next shot so how have they just docked him one shot?
I think it is incredible that any player should be subjected to what he went through and it is to his credit that he stood up to it. Remember, this was the same player that missed out on a play-off in the PGA Championship the year Martin Kaymer won because he grounded his club in sand. I know I'm only echoing what many far better known than me have said, but the authorities really do need to check themselves on this one. Anyway, it was a superb win for DJ and I'd be surprised if many would begrudge him the win.
