The Masters

Well who saw that coming in the Masters?

I know a few people who backed Danny Willett to win but I'm talking more about the incredible meltdown by Jordan Spieth, someone who we have all started to look at as ice-cool and unflappable.

The truth is that Spieth had been fighting all week and it was only due to a ridiculously good short game and a red-hot putter that he was where he was, but still the second shot at 12 is nearly impossible to explain. I've played wedge shots against the cut of the grass and I might heavy the shot a little but he nearly didn't make the creek. The nerves got to him and the fact that on the tee the score went up that Willett was within one must have had a bearing.

One thing I would say is that I don't believe this will hurt Jordan

He has already proved to be incredibly resilient and I would not be surprised at all of he comes back to win another major this year. As I said, he was fighting with losing it right all week and eventually the golfing gods caught up with him but he will sort that out. A truly incredible Masters though and a terrific moment for Danny Willett, and English and European golf.

Masters Sweepstake

Back home we had a sweep and the winner who had Danny was Phil Veness. Joint second were Spieth and Westwood - who had a great Masters - and the lucky sweep winners there were Terry Hughes and Jack Dale who share the value of the carry bag. Come in soon all of you and we'll sort your prizes.

Captain pro challenge

I don't always mention our Captain/Pro matches but as last week was my first with new Captain Paul Robertson, I think I should this time as it was such a great game. We eased into a three-hole lead over the hapless Darren Bovis and John Faulkner, until a team talk by Darren suddenly energised them and four holes later they were one up with two to play. Rattled, we had a team talk of our own which went something like 'how did that happen? We'd better make some birdies' and once again it seemed to work. We managed to birdie the last two to claim a great win in our first match but I really do have to congratulate our opponents on a fantastic game - they was robbed as they say. Well done Paul - first of many.

Coach corner

This week has continued the rise in business at the club as we see more visitors and members out on the course. My new SkyTrak system has been used a few times for club fittings this week and it really is amazing how everyone who gets to use the system finds out, almost without fail, that they could be gaining good yardage and better accuracy with the new technology on offer. Remember that even if you are not in the market for clubs, the system is there as a tool to tell you accurately your distances and gaps between clubs (gapping). A session like this is invaluable and you can book one for just £25. Get in touch here.

Shop news

The new Benross equipment has gone down very well, outperforming its far more expensive rivals so I would recommend you try them - particularly as they are nearly half the price of the more expensive brands.

As the drier weather arrives it seems we all get our trolleys out again. The latest electric trolley to arrive this week reacts to your walking pace so you don't need to set the speed with a button or dial. It really does work so come in for a demo now.

We have had a number of people ordering Motocaddy and PowaKaddy trolleys with the Battery Trade-In discount. Remember you can have £25 off any Lithium product, including trolleys, and I also offer my members and regulars a small discount on both, which most retailers, including American Golf, do not.

The FootJoy Shoe Trade-In is also going down well as the number of traded in pairs in our back office is testament to. You can get up to £20 off selected FootJoy shoes so come in and find your new summer pair.

We also still have bag deals and wedge offers on Cleveland and Vokey products so this is the right time to update your equipment. We are open all weekdays until 6pm now so drop in whenever you have a chance. Stevie, Enzo and I will be glad to help and advise.

I hope you enjoy the rest of my newsletter and remember – stay out of the rough!
